Abstract: In this dissertation, the performance of the multiple functions of family farming in the district of Chibuto was analyzed, having as sample areas the administrative posts of Malehice, Chibuto-sede and Chaimite. We tried to describe the multifunctional aspects of agriculture practiced by the family sector, highlighting socio-economic reproduction, food security, the maintenance of the social and cultural fabric and the preservation of the district's natural resources and rural landscape. The factors that influence the performance of these functions were also identified and explained, namely, territorial dynamics and collective projects. Thus, when applying the quanti-quality approach method, materialized by the observational procedure and the semi-structured interview and direct observation techniques, we sought to demonstrate throughout the analysis, through the relationship between the empirical data obtained in the posts administrative references and theoretical data based on the theory of territory and territorial development, that the performance of the multiple agricultural functions practiced by the family sector was expressed by the low family monetary income, high unemployment, reduced food security, loss of family habits and customs and community, low level of use of soil conservation techniques. This scenario finds its explanation in the low level of associativism of the members of the families and the community, in the weak institutional capacity although there is some effort on the part of the public and private institutions to provide support in the production, in the associativism and in the availability of social services. basic needs for peasant families. The scattered or fragmented individual initiatives, namely artisanal fishing, the extraction of firewood, the sale of some agricultural products and more, have been a resource for families to guarantee their socio-economic reproduction and food security. Public policies have not been fully reported with convergence, especially in the provision of agricultural credit. Thus, it is necessary to incorporate the notion of multifunctionality of agriculture as a dynamic model for sustainable rural development in the district. (Tradução Nossa)
