Abstract: This work aims to analyze the effects of HIV and AIDS, on agricultural production and on the well-being of rural producers. A case study was carried out in the district of Xai-Xai, of a descriptive nature in a quantitative approach, the object of study was made up of households directly affected and not directly affected. Data collection was based on a survey and qualitative data were collected based on semi-structured interviews, group discussions and direct observation, with 126 households being surveyed, of which 27 were male and 99 female and the interview included 2 SDAE technicians and 5 activists from the Provincial Nucleus on Fighting AIDS. For the selection of visited villages and producers, non-probabilistic sampling was used. The study shows that agriculture is the main activity, of the AFs directly affected, where 67% produce for consumption and for the AFs not directly affected, only 20% produce for consumption, most of which are for sale (60%). The groups claim to be using techniques to improve soil productivity, through technical assistance from public and private extension services, but with less participation for the AFs directly affected (69%) on field days for demonstrations, unlike the AFs not directly affected with 16%. For those directly affected, the negative implications are associated with the production area (53% reduced and 19% abandoned), working time (32% reduced, works <1h / day), family income (49% has income <1000 and 24% between 1000-4000) and the participation of the AFs in community activities (60% reduced), this due to insufficient labor; physical inability to carry out agricultural activities; abandonment of distant fields; inaccessibility of new technologies; need to have time for medical consultations and exclusion from the market. Thus, to improve the living conditions of households, measures include reducing the negative effects of social structure, measures that focus on the time spent and energy in preparing the land and measures that aim to support the loss of labor and access the information.(TRADUÇÃO NOSSA)
