Abstract:
The work “Análise comparativa da legitimidade democrática em cinco países: Moçambique,
Tanzânia, África do Sul, Portugal e Brasil (2004-2021)”, deals with the comparative study of
democratic legitimacy, which as a phenomenon manifests itself in democracy and occurs be-
cause most voters, expressed by voting support and democratically legitimize a candidate or par-
ty.The general objective of the work is to compare democratic legitimacy in Mozambique, Tan-
zania, South Africa, Portugal, and Brazil; in relation to the specific objectives, we describe the
ways of formulating democratic legitimacy and explain the results of the 2004-2021 elections,
we identify democratic legitimacy. To carry out the work, we used the comparative method, re-
sorted to the MSSD to study democratic legitimacy, carried out qualitative research, carried out a
documentary consultation, carried out quantitative research marked by the collection and pro-
cessing of data from the 2004-2021 elections.
The main conclusions pass through the lack of democratic legitimacy in the presidential and
legislative elections in the countries compared, except for the 2004 election in South Africa,
where we registered democratic legitimacy, because the majority of the electorate voted for the
winning party, in Tanzania, in the 2005, the winning presidential candidate, obtained the majori-
ty of voters' votes, but without democratic legitimacy, just electoral legitimacy because elections,
are not effective mechanisms that allow voters to change rulers and influence decisions and there
is no democratic political culture
