Abstract:
The present research aims to analyse the phenomenon of school dropout in the Marista School
of Manhiça district. It had a perspective of qualitative research combined with descriptive
matters and incorporating some quantitative analysis based on official statistics from
Department of Education. For the collection of data, it was the survey or inquiry and non-
structured interview, which were applied to the teachers, parents or the guardians and the
headmasters of the institution, The main issue was formulated in the following way: What are
the causes and factors of school dropout in the Marista School of Manhiça district. The study or
research involved more or less 56 people who were inquired and interviewed, and they were
able to answer, among different socioeconomic professional categories, such as: the
headmasters (3), teachers (33) making almost 49,3% of teachers, parents and the guardian of
education (20). After analysing the collected data, there was an observation of significative
average of school dropout; many pupils/students have great difficulties in remaining or staying
motivated to invest on school learning. This reality occurs because of following causes (low
average of students, disinterest, sexual abuse and harassment, consumption of alcohol and
drugs, low level of education of parents, seasonal employment, teachers without motivation
and absences) and there are also some factors (low preparation in previous classes, social
stability or conditions, schools without vacances during the registrations) and others elements
such as: inadequate didactics materials, irrelevant curriculum towards the local context and
unadopted to school, school absenteeism, precoce paternity, low socioeconomic level of the
families and lack of incentive from parents. There is a need of having new strategies of
promotion and appreciation of the school learning, which are largely neglected towards the
understanding of the major relevance of professional activity less qualified.
