Abstract:
The present dissertation is one of the essential requirements for the completion of the
Master's degree, at Universidade Eduardo Mondlane UEM, according to the postgraduate
regulation, (2020 P.23), it has as its theme: “Factors of Stigmatization of Young People
with Epilepsy from 20 to 24 years old in the Family System, assisted at the Neurology
Service of the Maputo Central Hospital in the year 2019 to 2020”. This study has as its
research target group, young people with epilepsy. To analyze factors of stigmatization of
young people with epilepsy in the family system was the general objective; thus, this goal
influenced the choice of approach to the phenomenon in methodological terms.
The qualitative method proved to be fundamental since the factors that lead to the
stigmatization of the young epileptics under analysis could only be understood based on
their experience with the disease through their reports. In the field research, it was decided
to use the semi-structured interview, the family genogram and the Test Fast. With these
tools, it was possible to gather the perceptions and meanings of the disease for patients and
their family system. Likewise, he visualized the organization of the family system in terms
of hierarchical structure and level of cohesion.
The study concluded that the factors of stigma in epilepsy for the target group are
associated with a lack of scientific knowledge about the disease and its causes, prejudiced
ideas, such as the punishment of ancestors, non-compliance with a ritual in the breast.
family by the parents or by the patient. Another important consideration that contributes to
stigma within the family system is the way in which the disease manifests itself when the
patient has a crisis, since this is unpredictable, which causes fear and withdrawal from their
family members at a time of great need. by the patient.
