| en_US |

dc.description.resumo | This is a qualitative study whose main objective is to analyze the role of Non- Governmental Organizations (NGO) in the development of local communities in the cities of Beira and Dondo (Mozambique), between 2006 and 2016. This study intends to understand the contribution of NGO work in the area of prevention and mitigation of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome in the development of local communities. Its specific objectives are: (a) to identify the activities carried out by NGO in the communities where they are in Sofala Province; (b) describe how NGO are active in the communities in which they operate; (c) assess changes within communities resulting from NGO intervention. For the collection of data were conducted semi-structured interviews. In this context, five (5) NGO were selected, four (4) of the Beira city and one (1) in the Dondo city. Forty-seven (47) people were interviewed, namely the coordinator of the Provincial AIDS Control Unit (NPCS) in Sofala Province, five (5) NGO managers, six (6) community leaders and thirty-five (35) beneficiaries of the activities carried out by NGO, of which thirty (30) were female and seventeen (17) were male, aged between eighteen (18) and fifty-nine (59) years old. This study is based on Amartya Sen's theory of Development as Freedom, as a critique of the economic perspective that defines development as measurable through Gross Domestic Product (GDP), stating that freedom is the means and the end of development. Analyzing the activities of these organizations it was possible to verify that these NGO contribute to improving the state of health of the communities where they operate, enabling infected and affected people to return to productive activities. It is also concluded that they contribute to the development of communities through awareness raising to change attitudes and improve the quality of life of populations. | en_US |
