The study of internal migration occupies a prominent place in the field of demographic analysis due to the role that migration plays and will play on the growth of a country's population. Therefore, it has an incalculable value in the formulation and execution of economic and social planning programs. Migration, together with fertility and mortality, is an important demographic component, thus becoming one of the mechanisms for the spatial redistribution of the population. On the other hand, it is recognized that spatial mobility is an agent of social change, a channel for cultural diffusion and national integration. This study fits within the partial requirements for obtaining the Master's degree in Population and Development by the Faculty of Letters and Social Sciences of the Eduardo Mondlane University. And it focuses on analyzing the phenomenon of female migration in São Tomé and Príncipe with a particular focus from rural to urban areas. The study seeks to understand the reasons that led women to migrate from rural to urban areas, to analyze their socio-demographic characteristics and the role of women in making the decision to migrate. The study was carried out based on the combination of quantitative and qualitative research using the survey and life histories, respectively, of migrant women in the cities of São Tomé and Príncipe and supported by the literature review. The analyzed data confirm the findings made by Siddique (2004), Adepoju (2002), following which today, women migrate autonomously and for the same reasons as men, in search of women living conditions. This phenomenon is verified in STP, where the decision making to migrate among women is strongly influenced by the expectations they have regarding the opportunities to develop a commercial activity in the cities, mainly informal trade, although there is a significant weight of women who reported migrating by marriage, ie family reasons. Dinasalda Santana de Ceita 7Migrant women from São Tomé and their insertion in the urban environment The study also revealed that despite the geographic proximity between rural and urban areas, due to the size of the country itself, it does not necessarily imply that women in rural areas go to nearby cities, but to relatively more distant cities. The study also shows that the development imbalance between the districts, generated an intense migration flow towards the capital city São Tomé. (TRADUÇÃO NOSSA)en_US
