| dc.description.abstract | Grewia monticola Sond. No ensaio DPPH, a raiz apresentou maior actividade antioxidante (IC₅₀ = 31,36 ± 1,11 µg/mL), enquanto na TAC (capacidade antioxidante total) as folhas apresentaram melhor actividade (IC₅₀ = 27,12 ± 1,24 µg/mL) e no poder redutor férrico (FRP) o caule apresentou maior actividade (IC₅₀ = 33,91 ± 0,83 µg/mL). | en_US |

| dc.description.resumo | Grewia monticola Sond. it is a medicinal plant used in traditional African medicine in the treatment of gastrointestinal infections, inflammation and other pathologies. The present study aimed to determine the phytochemical constituents and evaluate the an tioxidant, antimicrobial and inhibitory activities of the enzyme α-amylase of G. monticola extracts. Hydroethanolic extracts were obtained from the leaves, stem and root, in which total phe nols, total flavonoids and tannins were determined by spectrophotometric methods. Antio xidant activity was evaluated by DPPH, total antioxidant activity (TAC) and ferric reduci ng power (FRP), antimicrobial activity by disk diffusion and α-amylase inhibition by 3,5 dinitrosalicylic acid (DNSA) methods. The results revealed total phenol contents between 4.778 ± 0.058 and 6.508 ± 0.180 mg EAG/g, while the flavonoids showed higher concentration in the stem (9.143 ± 0.302 mg EQ/g). Tannins were detected in the stem and leaves. In the DPPH assay, the root showed higher antioxidant activity (CI₅₀ = 31.36 ± 1.11 μg/mL), while in the TAC (total antioxidant capacity) the leaves showed better activity (CI₅₀ = 27.12 ± 1.24 μg/mL) and in the ferric reducing power (FRP) the stem showed higher activity (CI₅₀ = 33.91 ± 0.83 μg/mL). All extracts showed antimicrobial activity, with inhibition halos between 8.84 and 27.68 mm. In the inhibition of α-amylase, the leaf and stem extracts showed activity, with CI₅₀ of 30.10 ± 0.82 and 48.48 ± 1.54 μg/mL, respectively. The root extract, in turn, showed inhibition higher than 50% even at the lowest concentrations tested, and it was not possible to empirically estimate its CI₅₀, which suggests a higher potency than acarbose (CI₅₀ = 63.57 ± 3.85 μg/mL). It is concluded that G. monticola has phytochemical constituents and antioxidant, antimicrobial and α-amylase inhibitory activities, showing pharmacological potential and preliminarily supporting its use in traditional medicine. These results constitute a basis for future research on the bioactive compounds of the species and their potential development as a phytotherapeutic product. | en_US |
